Lawsuit History

October 2015 - Big Heart Pet Brands, and specifically its product Meow Mix, are the target of a class action suit that alleges overseas slave labor practices are imposed in the production of its cat food.

The complaint details horrific conditions under which the seafood is caught and processed for mass manufacturing. It also contends that Big Heart Pet Brands was aware of the slave labor and human rights abuses that are forced upon the fisherman working to catch seafood ingredients for Meow Mix, and the mega-conglomerate failed to disclose the violations to consumers.

The suit was filed in a California court by Jessica Hughes on behalf of herself and those similarly situated.

Class members include consumers who have purchased Meow Mix under false pretenses, unaware of offensive and appalling ritual practices in Asia that are enforced on workers and which play a key part in the manufacturing of the cat food.
