Ingredient Review
Our review of Halo Holistic Healthy Weight Small Breed Grain-Free Wild Salmon & Whitefish Dry Dog Food begins with a detailed look at the food’s ingredients.
The first ingredient is Salmon Whitefish Dried Egg Product Chickpeas Dried Lentils Dried Peas Pea Protein Soy Protein Concentrate Flaxseed Pea Fiber Natural Flavor Dicalcium Phosphate Chicken Fat. N/A
The second ingredient is Mixed Tocopherols. Mixed tocopherols are a form of vitamin E. These antioxidants are used as a natural preservative. In pet food, mixed tocopherols help to prevent spoilage and oxidization.
The third ingredient is Calcium Sulfate. Calcium sulfate is an inorganic calcium salt with the formula CaSO4, that is also known as calcium sulphate. The calcium sulfate in pet food is an additive that is used to stabilize or firm other ingredients, and as a drying agent to prevent excess moisture buildup that could lead to spoilage.
The fourth ingredient is L-Carnitine. Carnitine is a quaternary ammonium compound involved in metabolism in most mammals, plants, and some bacteria. Carnitine exists as one of two stereoisomers. Both are biologically active but only l-carnitine naturally occurs in animals and d-carnitine is toxic as it inhibits the activity of the l-form.
When we analyzed the ingredients in Halo Holistic Healthy Weight Small Breed Grain-Free Wild Salmon & Whitefish Dry Dog Food, we found that most of the protein is derived from meat based sources.
