Ingredient Review

Our review of Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets DH Dental Health Dry Cat Food begins with a detailed look at the food’s ingredients.

The first ingredient is Ground Yellow Corn. Ground yellow corn is made with cooked kernels from yellow corn species. In pet food, ground yellow corn can be a filler as well as source of inexpensive protein, carbohydrates, and fiber.

The second ingredient is Poultry By-Product Meal. Sometimes abbreviated as PBM, poultry by-product meal is cooked, finely ground protein made with clean, rendered parts of chicken, turkey, and other poultry carcasses. The poultry by-product meal in pet food can contain bones, internal organs, and undeveloped eggs; it is considered to be of low quality and is less digestible than chicken meat.

The third ingredient is Corn Gluten Meal. Corn gluten meal is produced as a byproduct from the manufacture of corn syrup and other sweeteners made with corn. It contains no wheat gluten. The corn gluten meal in pet food is a source of inexpensive protein, but it has high levels of cysteine, which have been linked to the formation of urinary stones.

The fourth ingredient is Animal Liver Flavor. Animal liver flavor is dried liver from an animal that has been slaughtered for consumption. This liver has been pulverized into a fine powder and applied via a spraying process. In pet food, animal liver flavor can increase palatability naturally – it’s often used to coat kibbles.

The fifth ingredient is Animal Fat. Animal fat is a general term for fat from unspecified animals that have been rendered. In pet food, animal fat can be added to other ingredients to increase overall fat content and support the absorption of fat-soluble nutrients.

When we analyzed the ingredients in Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets DH Dental Health Dry Cat Food, we found that most of the protein is derived from meat based sources.
